The votes have been submitted and results tallied. After much debate among the award selection committee the lucky recipients of March 2013′s Dick-in-a-Box have been chosen. Your winners? The states of North Dakota and Arkansas who, in an apparent race to the bottom, both passed some of the most anti-choice laws in the country. Arkansas kicked the month off by passing a law banning most abortions after the 12th week of pregnancy. Not to be outdone, North Dakota quickly followed suit by passing an even more restrictive law which bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected; as early as 6 weeks into a pregnancy. Think about that for a minute… how many pregnant women do you know who had realized they were pregnant before six weeks? I don’t know about you, but most pregnant women that I’ve known certainly didn’t.
So basically North Dakota is trying to ban all abortions, which is funny because, well, Roe v. Wade. I’m sure you’ve heard of it? In case you don’t know, Roe v. Wade states that a person has a right to an abortion until the fetus is viable. Viability being defined as potentially able to live outside the mother’s womb (even with artificial aid) which is generally between 24-28 weeks. That means North Dakota and Arkansas have both regressed to the point of unconstitutionality.
These laws aren’t about protecting the health and well-being of women in those states. The point is to participate in a national anti-choice strategy of chipping away at Roe v. Wade, by targeting states with only one abortion provider. As if that’s not bad enough, tax payers in these states are going to have to pay to defend these unconstitutional laws. Laws like these stand a very good chance of being struck down or at least barred from taking effect; we’re seeing this very scenario play-out in South Dakota. It’s politics at the cost of women’s rights, health and safety, not to mention those taxpayer dollars. Uncompromising, spare-no-expense, anti-woman, dick-headedness just to make a statement? It’s the sort of behavior that the Dick-in-a-Box award was created to recognize!
So, without further ado I present the states of North Dakota and Arkansas with March’s Dick-in-a-Box for their anti-woman, anti-privacy, anti-choice, anti-health, anti-safety, anti-taxpayer and generally dick-headed new laws.
